Web accessibility is no longer just a recommendation, but a legal obligation. With the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG) and the corresponding EU directives, public authorities and many companies are obliged to make their digital offerings accessible to all people – regardless of physical or technical limitations. Specifically, this means that websites must be designed in such a way that they can also be used with screen readers, keyboard controls, or other assistive technologies. Clear structures, sufficient contrast, understandable texts, and alternative texts for images are just as much a part of the requirements as comprehensible navigation.

Our TYPO3-based Website Base provides a stable foundation for this. It has been designed for high technical quality from the outset and already meets many accessibility requirements as standard. At the same time, we are continuously developing our solution to comply with legal requirements and offer users the most accessible experience possible. This ensures that your website is not only legally compliant, but also open to all visitors.

Optimized accessibility for a better user experience – improvements in the frontend

Our developers have implemented numerous measures to further increase the accessibility of our websites. For example, keyboard control has been optimized so that the focus order is correct and lightboxes, pop-ups, and accordions can also be operated without any problems. Added ARIA roles, labels, and attributes ensure that screen readers can capture content more reliably.

In addition, we have clearly labeled interactive elements and removed unnecessary titles from non-interactive images. The contrast requirements for hover and focus states have also been revised to make content more visible. For even easier navigation, landmarks have been given accessible names and bypass links have been integrated to allow users to quickly skip certain areas.

In addition, we have further refined the semantic structure by clearly structuring headings and optimizing lists. These improvements provide greater orientation, facilitate the use of assistive technologies, and help ensure that our websites not only comply with legal requirements but also offer all users a comfortable and accessible experience.

Accessibility in the TYPO3 backend

With TYPO3 v13, our customers also benefit from further advances in accessibility. The backend has been comprehensively modernized, is more clearly structured, and complies with current European guidelines.

New features such as a dark mode for improved readability, optimized search with filters and categories, and hotkeys for key actions make it easier to use, even for editors with disabilities. In addition, TYPO3 v13 offers full support for right-to-left languages and places greater emphasis on compliance with WCAG standards.

This ensures that accessibility is consistently implemented not only in the front end, but also in everyday editorial work.
